About Cathy Freeman's Height
Cathy Freeman is one of Australia’s most celebrated athletes and a symbol of national unity and reconciliation. Born in Mackay, Queensland, to Indigenous Australian parents, Freeman showed prodigious talent for running from an early age and began competing at the national level as a teenager, quickly rising through the ranks. She made her international breakthrough at the 1990 Commonwealth Games, winning gold as part of Australia’s 4x100m relay team at age 16. Over the next decade, she became one of the world’s leading sprinters, excelling in both 200m and especially the 400m events. Freeman’s crowning achievement was winning the 400m gold medal at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, after lighting the Olympic cauldron at the opening ceremony, marking a defining moment for Indigenous representation in Australia. Her victory lap, draped with both Aboriginal and Australian flags, became an iconic image of hope and reconciliation. Her career includes two World Championship gold medals (1997 and 1999), four Commonwealth Games golds (1990–1994), national and Commonwealth records, and the Australian of the Year award (1998). She retired in 2003 and continues advocacy for Indigenous rights through her Cathy Freeman Foundation.
