About Alexei Shirov's Height

Alexei Shirov is a renowned chess grandmaster recognized for his imaginative and aggressive play. Born in Riga, Latvia (then part of the Soviet Union) on July 4, 1972, Shirov demonstrated chess talent early, progressing rapidly as a junior. He became an International Master in 1988 and a Grandmaster in 1990, at age 17. During the 1990s, Shirov rose to the elite level of world chess, admired for a dynamic style often compared to fellow Latvian Mikhail Tal. In 1994, he moved to Spain and represented that country before returning to play for Latvia. His top achievements include reaching #2 in the FIDE world rankings, winning major tournaments such as Biel (1991), Madrid (1997), Monte Carlo (2003), and M-Tel Masters (2009), and defeating Vladimir Kramnik in the 1998 Candidates match. Controversially, he was denied a world championship shot against Garry Kasparov due to sponsorship shortfalls. Shirov is also the author of the acclaimed 'Fire on Board' books and remains active as a competitor, coach, and commentator.
