Antoaneta Stefanova is a renowned Bulgarian chess grandmaster and one of the most prominent female players in the history of the game. Born on April 19, 1979, in Sofia, Bulgaria, she began playing chess at an early age under the guidance of her father. Her prodigious talent was evident from childhood; by age seven she had already won her first national title. Stefanova’s rise through the ranks was swift. She earned her Woman Grandmaster (WGM) title in 1997 and became a full Grandmaster (GM) in 2002—a rare achievement among female players. Her crowning moment came in 2004 when she won the Women’s World Chess Championship by defeating Ekaterina Kovalevskaya, establishing her as one of only a handful of women to ever hold this prestigious title. Stefanova has represented Bulgaria at many Chess Olympiads and European Team Championships, often playing on board one for Bulgaria’s women’s team, and has competed successfully in open tournaments against male grandmasters. In addition to chess, she has been active in politics and, since May 2021, has served as a member of Bulgaria's National Assembly with the 'There Is Such A People' party.
